The Isle of Iona is a small island off the west coast of Scotland, where in 563 Columba founded a Celtic monastery that was very influential in its own times. In the middle ages it was the site of a Benedictine abbey and over the centuries has attracted many thousands of people on their own pilgrim journeys.

The Iona Community, founded in 1938 by the Rev George MacLeod, then a parish minister in Glasgow is an ecumenical Christian community that is committed to seeking new ways of living the Gospel in today's world.   learn more

Decline in Value of Dollar Leads to Increase In Suggested Donations from Friends and Associates of Iona Community

All of us who have traveled abroad realize how much the value of the dollar has declined in the last eight years.  That change has necessitated an adjustment in the recommended donations from Associates and Friends, to bring our giving into parity of what is given by our sisters and brothers in the rest of the world.  To read a letter that the Iona Community's leader, the Rev. Kathy Galloway, has written to our members, click here

The new suggested donations are reflected in the Commitment Forms found elsewhere on this site.

The Iona Community New World Foundation

The Iona Community New World Foundation was established in February, 1978 to serve as a channel of information about the Iona Community in the United States and to answer the expressed desire of many Americans to assist materially in supporting the Iona Community's work and programs.

St. Martin's Cross - IonaYou may support the Iona Community and its work in the following way.  United States citizens, residents, and corporations may obtain income tax deductions for their contributions, within the terms of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, by sending checks to the order of the Iona Community New World Foundation, Inc. in the care of Sandra Jividen, Treasurer, 31 Old Lakey Gap Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711.

American visitors at the Abbey may leave checks in the office to be forwarded on to the Treasurer.  This foundation has been held by the IRS to be a tax exempt charity, and all funds collected are for the work of the Iona Community.  A receipt as required by the IRS will be sent to each donor.

One way that the Foundation will aid the community is by contributing to its subsidy fund so that unemployed persons and those on low incomes or pensions will be able to stay in the Abbey or the MacLeod Center for conferences and meetings of all kinds.  Legacies and bequests are welcome as well as in memoriam donations.  If you would like to place the Foundation in your will, you may write to the Treasurer for further information.

You may enroll as an Associate of the Iona Community by downloading and filling out the form available on this site.  click here   Associates commit themselves to daily prayer for the Members of the Community.  You may also enroll as Friend of the Community which means you make an annul gift and using the form available on this site. click here.
